KP Makes History with First Deceased Organ Donor Case

For the first time in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), doctors have successfully retrieved and transplanted organs from a deceased donor. The organs were donated by the family of 14-year-old Jawad Khan, who was declared brain dead after a road accident in Mardan district.

With the consent of Jawad’s father, Noor Dad Khan, doctors retrieved his corneas, kidneys, and liver. These organs were transplanted to five patients in Peshawar and Lahore, giving them a new lease on life. The Medical Transplant Regulatory Authority (MTRA) approved the procedure, calling it a “remarkable sacrifice.”

Specialized medical teams from the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) Lahore, Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD) Peshawar, CMH, Bahria International Hospital Rawalpindi, and the Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO) participated in the retrieval and transplantation process.

Officials said this historic case sets a new example of humanity and compassion in the province. Dr. Yasir Murad of Murad Eye Bank at PICO HMC confirmed that both corneas were transplanted to deserving patients, marking the first such procedure in the region.

Jawad Khan’s family’s decision has been widely praised by medical professionals and officials, who hope it will inspire others to consider organ donation and help save more lives in the future.
