Mohammad Haris has made himself integral to Pakistan’s white-ball setup under Mike Hesson and Pakistan’s former coach Jason Gillespie believes he has what it takes to define the next era of Pakistan cricket.
Haris, who had been watching from the sidelines during Mohammad Rizwan’s continued run with the T20 team, has taken his chances with both hands, with the T20 series against Bangladesh being another example. His performances have caught the eye of Jason Gillespie, who has singled out Mohammad Haris as a key cog in the team’s future fortunes.
Speaking to PakPassion, Gillespie said: “I was particularly excited about the selection of Mohammad Haris. I think he is the type of character and personality that the Pakistan team needs. Someone who’s very much an upbeat character, he’s busy, he’s energetic—that’s what Pakistan needs in the short-format space. I was really pleased when that selection was made.”
Jason Gillespie also warned Haris and the PCB that his run with the team will not always be an upwards ladder. “He’s a young player. He’s gonna have some really good periods and maybe some not-so-good periods, but I think if there’s patience with guys like that, he will repay that patience in spades,” he added.
Mohammad Haris has certainly done well to earn all the praise from Jason Gillespie. The wicket-keeper batter has made a name for himself with his attacking batting style and fearless approach after getting a decent run of games under Mike Hesson. With Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman above him, he has made the number three position his own for the foreseeable future.
His next test will come against Bangladesh at their home next month, and if he passes that with flying colours, there will be no denying that Mohammad Haris could become a key player in Pakistan’s white-ball future for years to come.
