In a stellar display of skill and composure on the water, Pakistan’s sailing team made its mark at the 31st Al Bareh Sailing Regatta in Bahrain.
Muzammil Hassan clinched the country’s only gold medal in the ILCA 7 class at the prestigious event, while compatriot Hamza Ejaz also impressed, securing a bronze to cap off a successful campaign for the national contingent.
The ILCA 7 class — previously known as Laser Standard — is one of the most competitive Olympic categories in the sport, and Pakistan’s strong showing in the event marked a significant breakthrough. Hassan led the fleet with consistent performances across the series, showcasing sharp race awareness and impressive tactical decisions that saw him edge out seasoned regional rivals.
Pakistan’s younger generation of sailors also made waves in Bahrain, offering a glimpse into the future of the sport. In the Optimist class — a category for sailors under 15 — Muhammad Suleman finished just outside the podium in fourth place. Competing against a strong field, Suleman impressed with his composure under pressure.
Meanwhile, in the ILCA 4 category, Muzammil Hussain — another promising young sailor — secured a commendable sixth-place finish. Both junior athletes are part of Pakistan’s long-term development pathway aimed at preparing youth for continental and Olympic-level competition.
The Al Bareh Sailing Regatta, hosted by the Bahrain Maritime Sports Association, is a key fixture on the regional calendar, known for its challenging wind conditions and tactical demands. Pakistan’s strong performance will serve as a confidence booster ahead of future events.
As Pakistan continues to make strides in lesser-publicised sports like sailing, results such as these reaffirm the country’s growing potential in watersports and its emergence as a competitive force in the region.
