Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium Begins Floodlight Upgrade

The iconic Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium is undergoing another significant facelift, with work already underway to upgrade its aging floodlights to state-of-the-art LED systems.

According to sources, the old metal halide lights have been dismantled from the towering pylons that have illuminated countless matches over the years. In their place, a modern LED setup will be installed, promising brighter, more energy-efficient lighting that meets international standards.

The upgrade is seen as part of the PCB’s efforts to spruce up existing cricketing venues.

Rawalpindi Stadium has hosted everything from historic Test matches to high-voltage Pakistan Super League (PSL) contests, and with the latest upgrades, it should only see an increase in its share of matches in the coming years.

For players and broadcasters alike, the change will be a welcome one. LED floodlights provide sharper visibility, reduce glare, and are easier to control for broadcast requirements, especially during high-definition telecasts. They also consume less power and require less maintenance compared to older systems, making them more sustainable in the long run.

The PCB has prioritised infrastructure improvements at major venues in anticipation of a busy international calendar and the next PSL cycle. With upgrades at Karachi and Lahore already completed, attention has now turned to Rawalpindi, a venue cherished for its fast outfield and energetic crowds.

Once the installation is finished, the stadium will be ready to host more top-tier matches under lights, offering a better experience for fans in the stands and millions watching on screens.
