Two Cities in Gilgit-Baltistan Break Years-Old Highest Daily Temperature Records

The Met Office informed that a new extreme maximum temperature record was set for Chilas and Bunji yesterday on 5 July, surpassing the previous record as per following:

  • Highest Maximum Temperature Observed on 5 July at Chilas was 48.5°C. Its previous Historical Extreme Maximum Record was 47.7°C on 17 July 1997.
  • Highest Maximum Temperature Observed on 5 July at Bunji was 46.1°C. Its previous Historical Extreme Maximum Record was 45.6 °C on 12 July 1971.

These persistent high temperatures over northern areas may accelerate snow and glacier melt, triggering GLOF and flash flood incidents, in vulnerable valleys and surrounding regions during the upcoming week.
