India Suffer Fresh WCL Humiliation in Crushing Defeat to England

India Champions’ World Championship of Legends (WCL) campaign continued to falter as England became the latest team to keep the current title holders winless this year.

Ravi Bopara was the hero for the hosts as he turned back the clock with a vintage all-round performance to secure a 23-run win for his team at Headingley. The 40-year-old all-rounder delivered a masterclass under the Leeds sun, scoring an unbeaten 110 off just 55 balls, grabbing a wicket, and taking three catches — a performance that rightfully earned him Player of the Match honours.

After being asked to bat first, England were rocked early when Phil Mustard was dismissed, before the duo of Ian Bell and Bopara took control. Bell laid the foundation with a fluent 54 off 39 balls, but it was Bopara who stole the show. Mixing power with finesse, he struck eight fours and eight towering sixes to push England to a daunting 223 for 3.

Moeen Ali’s blistering cameo of 33 off just 13 balls further supercharged the innings, while Samit Patel chipped in with a 9-ball 20.

Chasing 224, India Champions faltered early as Robin Uthappa fell for a duck. Shikhar Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu provided brief momentum, but it was the middle order that did the bulk of the scoring. Yuvraj Singh and Stuart Binny kept things close before Yusuf Pathan threatened to pull off a heist, smashing 52 off 29 balls in a powerful counterattack. However, the required rate proved too steep and wickets continued to fall.

India eventually finished on 200 for 8, 23 runs short of the target.

The result means India remain without a win at this year’s WCL and are all but out of the semifinals race, while England have renewed hope of making the final four. Pakistan, South Africa, and Australia have already booked their tickets for the semifinals, with the final team set to be decided soon.
