The incident occurred before the start of play on what was ostensibly the final day, when a steward representing Lancashire County Cricket Club approached the fan, identified as Farooq Nazar. According to the video, he was then asked to cover up the Pakistan shirt he was wearing from their 2019 ODI World Cup campaign. After asking for written proof, more stewards were called to resolve the issue.
The reason given by the stewards for the request was “concerns that it might antagonize fans,” however, no one at the venue seemed to complain. To the surprise of many nearby, including Indian and English supporters, the situation escalated unnecessarily. Police were called as well, though no altercation or protest occurred. Farooq Nazar complied without resistance, following the instruction despite appearing visibly confused and disappointed.
