Internet Left Outraged as Pakistani Fan is Asked to Cover Shirt at India-England Test

A Pakistani cricket fan attending the high-profile India vs England Test at Old Trafford was asked to cover his national team jersey during the match, an incident that has sparked quiet discontent among neutral supporters and raised questions about inclusivity at international sporting venues.

The whole episode was recorded and shared on social media, with fans from both sides of the border calling out the authorities over what transpired.

The incident occurred before the start of play on what was ostensibly the final day, when a steward representing Lancashire County Cricket Club approached the fan, identified as Farooq Nazar. According to the video, he was then asked to cover up the Pakistan shirt he was wearing from their 2019 ODI World Cup campaign. After asking for written proof, more stewards were called to resolve the issue.

The reason given by the stewards for the request was “concerns that it might antagonize fans,” however, no one at the venue seemed to complain. To the surprise of many nearby, including Indian and English supporters, the situation escalated unnecessarily. Police were called as well, though no altercation or protest occurred. Farooq Nazar complied without resistance, following the instruction despite appearing visibly confused and disappointed.

The whole incident has left the social sphere in uproar, with Pakistani and Indian fans calling out Lancashire for an explanation. The club is yet to issue a statement on the incident.

Cricket, often celebrated for its ability to unite people across borders, has seen instances of friction before, particularly in the context of India-Pakistan political tensions. But for a neutral fixture such as India vs England, such a restriction on fan attire is rare and, many would argue, unnecessary.

This episode adds to a growing conversation around how sports venues manage identity and expression in increasingly multicultural, global audiences. While security remains paramount, many are urging a more measured, inclusive approach, one that doesn’t penalize individuals simply for showing pride in their heritage.

As cricket continues to promote itself as a sport of openness and global fraternity, moments like these serve as a reminder that the spirit of the game must be preserved not just on the field, but in the stands as well.
