West Indies Hit by Major Injury Setback Before Pakistan ODI Series

West Indies have been dealt an untimely setback ahead of their three-match ODI series against Pakistan, which begins tonight, with young fast bowler Matthew Forde sidelined due to injury.

The 23-year-old dislocated his left shoulder while attempting a catch during a training session on Wednesday, forcing him out of the squad just hours before the series opener. In his place, the Caribbean side has called up uncapped all-rounder Johann Layne from the West Indies Academy. The 22-year-old Barbadian, known for his pace and lower-order hitting, now has a golden chance to make his international debut against Pakistan.

Matthew Forde has become a mainstay in the West Indies’ ODI lineup in recent months not only because of his bowling but also due to his ability to cause destruction with the bat. While his 17 wickets from 13 ODIs might not jump off the page, he holds the record for the joint-fastest ODI fifty, alongside AB de Villiers, underlining his dual threat.

The series, starting tonight in Trinidad, comes at a crucial time for the West Indies as they continue their rebuild following the disappointment of missing the last 50-over World Cup.

The West Indies, led by experienced skipper Shai Hope, will be looking to test themselves against a Pakistan side that is welcoming back its stalwarts amid a transition phase of its own. With young talents like Layne stepping into the spotlight, the series could provide fresh storylines for Caribbean cricket, as well as a stern challenge for the visitors.

West Indies squad for Pakistan ODIs:

Shai Hope (c), Jewel Andrew, Jediah Blades, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Justin Greaves, Amir Jangoo, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Johann Layne, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd
