Lahore is set to transform animal waste from slaughterhouses into affordable biogas, thanks to a new initiative by the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC).
Rather than sending thousands of tonnes of abattoir waste to landfills each day, the LWMC will process it into renewable energy as part of its ‘Waste to Value Project.’
According to LWMC spokesperson Omar Chaudhry, the company has already piloted biogas production from animal waste, achieving a daily output of 25,000 kilograms. The project, currently in its trial phase, aims to convert 1,000 tonnes of offal, intestines, and dung into biogas each day.
This effort is expected to generate 275,000 tonnes in carbon credits and bring in $4.2 million annually by rehabilitating a former waste disposal site. The facility, which costs Rs. 3 million to establish, will use anaerobic digesters to process the waste.
In addition to biogas, the plant will produce a nutrient-rich byproduct that can be used as fertilizer for home gardens and landscaping.
The LWMC spokesperson added that similar projects could be introduced in other districts as part of the Suthra Punjab campaign. Lahore’s network of slaughterhouses includes both government-run and 11 private abattoirs registered with the Pakistan Halal Council, as well as a major meat processing complex managed by the Punjab Agriculture and Meat Company in Shahpur Kanjran.
