The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based application aimed at combating human smuggling and improving immigration procedures in Pakistan.
Officials confirmed that the system will be piloted at Islamabad International Airport, marking the first step toward modernizing border management.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was briefed on the initiative during a high-level meeting at FIA headquarters in Islamabad. Senior officials, including additional directors general, directors, and zonal directors (via video link), reviewed ongoing reforms and progress on FIA’s modernization drive.
The AI-powered platform is designed to streamline passenger processing, reduce long queues, and enhance the detection of trafficking attempts. Calling it “a need of the hour,” Naqvi approved immediate funding for IT upgrades and ordered renovation of the FIA headquarters. He also directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to hand over land for the new FIA Academy without delay.
To address staff shortages, Naqvi instructed recruitment against vacant posts to begin promptly. “Resources will be provided, but performance is expected in return,” he told FIA officers.
FIA Director General Raja Riffat Mukhtar updated the minister on amendments to the FIA Act and the agency’s digital shift, including the rollout of an e-office system where official notices will soon carry QR codes for transparency.
The new AI system builds on FIA’s recent anti-human trafficking efforts. In partnership with the EU and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), a second-line border control facility was set up at Islamabad Airport in 2023, equipped with advanced forensic and IT tools.
Officials say the AI initiative will strengthen national security, disrupt trafficking networks, and make immigration more efficient for passengers.
