Iraq Updates Visa Policy for Pilgrims with New Age Rules

Iraqi authorities have announced revised visa regulations for pilgrims intending to visit the country’s revered religious sites, introducing new age-based conditions.

According to Muhammad Umar Butt, spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, men under the age of 50 will no longer be eligible to receive pilgrimage visas if traveling alone. Exceptions will apply for those under 50 who are accompanied by their families.

Officials explained that the revised policy is designed to streamline the management of pilgrim inflows and enhance security and logistical arrangements at holy shrines, particularly during peak religious gatherings.

They emphasized that the move is not intended to limit access to sacred places but rather to safeguard visitors and ensure more organized facilities for the millions who travel to Iraq annually.

The updated requirements will apply to all international pilgrims applying for religious visas to Iraq’s holy cities and shrines. Authorities have advised both individuals and travel operators to review the new criteria before submitting applications.

This marks a notable shift in Iraq’s approach to pilgrimage management and is expected to impact a significant number of prospective visitors.
