Former Pakistan women’s cricket captain-turned-commentator Sana Mir has responded strongly to recent propaganda directed at her from across the border, calling it “unfortunate and unnecessary.”
In a statement, Sana Mir expressed disappointment over what she described as deliberate attempts to twist her words. “It is sad to see matters being exaggerated in such a way. Sportspeople are already under immense pressure, and it is unfortunate that I am forced to issue a public clarification on this,” she said.
The controversy arose after Sana Mir referenced Natalia Pervaiz’s hometown of Azad Kashmir during commentary duties at the ongoing Women’s ODI World Cup, remarks that Indian media attempted to politicize. A scathing campaign was launched against her on social media, with many from across the border urging the ICC to remove her from her duties.
Interestingly, Natalia Pervaiz’s cricketing profile on the most-followed cricket website, CricInfo, was soon updated. Previously listed as Bandala, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, it now reads Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Clarifying her remarks, the ICC Hall of Fame inductee explained that her intention was simply to highlight the challenges and inspiring journey of the player in question. “As commentators, it is part of our role to tell stories about where players come from and the struggles they overcome. I also mentioned players from two other regions, but this matter has been unnecessarily politicized,” she added.
Sana Mir stressed that she bore no ill will towards anyone and that her comments were made in good faith.
It's unfortunate how things are being blown out of proportion and people in sports are being subjected to unnecessary pressure. It is sad that this requires an explanation at public level.
My comment about a Pakistan player's hometown was only meant to highlight the challenges… pic.twitter.com/G722fLj17C
