Pakistan has appointed seasoned diplomat Shafqat Ali Khan as its new Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ambassador Khan is a distinguished career diplomat with over three decades of experience in Pakistan’s Foreign Service.
He has served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation from March 2020 to September 2023, and earlier as Ambassador to the Republic of Poland, with concurrent accreditation to Estonia and Latvia, from July 2017 to March 2020.
He has also represented Pakistan at several key diplomatic missions abroad, including the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations in New York (1998–2001), the Embassy of Pakistan in Beijing (2007–2010), and the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations in Geneva (2010–2013).
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad, Ambassador Khan has held several important positions such as Spokesperson of the Foreign Office, Additional Foreign Secretary (Strategic Communications Division & Public Diplomacy), Additional Secretary (Europe), Director General (Europe), Diplomatic Advisor to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Director (Human Rights), Deputy Director (Foreign Secretary’s Office), Deputy Director (India), and Acting Director (Disarmament).
He began his diplomatic career in 1993, with his first posting as Section Officer (UN) in 1995.
Before joining the Foreign Service, Shafqat Ali Khan served as a Lecturer in Strategic Studies at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, from 1991 to 1993.
He holds a Master’s degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Quaid-i-Azam University, a Master’s in Intelligence and International Security from King’s College London, and a Diploma in Conflict Studies from Uppsala University, Sweden.
Known for his diplomatic expertise and strong academic background, Ambassador Khan is expected to play a key role in strengthening Pakistan–UAE bilateral relations, with a focus on promoting cooperation, trade, and the welfare of the Pakistani community residing in the Emirates.
