DIG Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazir on Sunday ordered a tougher crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles, triggering widespread enforcement across the province this month.
So far, more than 48,400 vehicles have been ticketed for violating emission rules. Authorities have also suspended the fitness certificates of 10 vehicles and revoked the route permits of over 16 vehicles involved in repeated violations.
According to traffic police officials, fines exceeding Rs. 97 million have already been issued to vehicles found releasing excessive emissions, an 85 percent rise compared to the same period last year.
Police further reported that seven FIRs have been registered against vehicles found in serious breach of environmental and traffic regulations.
During the ongoing campaign, officers stopped more than 7,700 vehicles, while over 2,100 on-cord trolleys carrying soil and sand were fined for contributing to road pollution. Officials added that any vehicle producing heavy smoke will be fined Rs. 2,000, along with the possibility of additional legal penalties.
