Spotify Takes on YouTube with New Music-Video Feature

Spotify has confirmed that it will begin offering music videos in the United States for the first time, marking a major shift in how the platform delivers content. Users will be able to switch between audio-only playback and full music video viewing by tapping an on-screen button, according to Variety.

The rollout is expected to begin in the coming weeks for listeners in the United States and Canada, while several other regions have had access to the feature for some time. Spotify has not yet clarified whether music videos will be available to all users or restricted to paid subscribers.

A New Phase

This development comes shortly after Spotify reached a licensing agreement with the National Music Publishers Association for expanded audiovisual rights. The deal paved the way for the platform to host official music videos legally and at scale.

The addition of music videos significantly broadens Spotify’s scope, moving it beyond its audio-only roots and positioning it closer to video-focused competitors such as YouTube. The update could encourage users to spend more time inside the app, while offering artists and rights-holders a new distribution and monetization channel for high-value content.

For everyday listeners, the presence of videos adds a more engaging way to enjoy music. It may also change how people use Spotify on secondary devices, where video playback can run in the background during daily tasks.

Over time, the platform is expected to expand its music-video catalog, introduce video-based playlists, and possibly develop a vertical-style feed tailored to video discovery.
