Punjab’s Rare Urial Can Now be Seen Alongside Motorway

The population of the rare Urial in Punjab’s Salt Range has increased significantly due to the Wildlife Department’s sustained conservation efforts. The species, once difficult to spot, can now be seen roaming freely across multiple areas.

According to the Deputy Director Wildlife, strict action against illegal hunting has played a key role in the recovery. Recent footage near the motorway shows large herds moving confidently along the mountain slopes – a sight rarely seen in past years.

In Chakwal, videos reveal an especially strong presence of Urial, with groups roaming without fear. Officials said legal trophy hunting also generates millions of dollars in revenue, which supports conservation programs.

The Punjab Urial, considered the pride of the province, is found only in the Salt Range and nowhere else in the world. Across the wider region — from Iran to Kazakhstan and Punjab to Ladakh — there are six known Urial types: Punjabi, Bukharan, Balochi, Afghan, Caspian, and Ladakhi. The Punjabi Urial is exclusive to Jhelum and Chakwal.

Standing 70 to 90 centimeters tall with horns up to 38 inches, the Punjabi Urial is known for its white underbelly, dark chest fur, and striking eyes, making it one of the most captivating wildlife species in the region.
