Major Motorway to Get Pakistan’s Most-Advanced Weather Alert System

A state-of-the-art “Weather on the Way” alert system is set to be installed along the Islamabad–Lahore Motorway (M-2), introducing Pakistan’s most advanced real-time weather monitoring network on a major travel route.

The system is being launched through a first-of-its-kind partnership between WeatherWalay and One Network, providing hyperlocal, real-time weather alerts to enhance road safety for millions of motorists.

Equipped with 14 automated weather stations, 5 air-quality sensors, 4 visibility sensors, satellite inputs, and advanced forecasts, the system continuously monitors fog, rainfall, wind, and low-visibility conditions.

A decision-support engine processes this data and instantly alerts travelers through smartphone apps, web platforms, and SMD screens at toll plazas.

For the first time, motorway operators, government agencies, and drivers will access the same real-time weather intelligence for route planning and hazard awareness, a practice aligned with global road safety standards.

Wide-Ranging Benefits Beyond the Motorway

The dense climate and sensor network will also support:

  • Agricultural planning and irrigation decisions
  • Accurate fog prediction on vulnerable motorway sections
  • Air-quality monitoring
  • Early warnings for dengue, crop pests, and plant diseases
  • Better logistics, tourism planning, and environmental protection

Designed for Pakistan’s diverse terrain, the system combines European, German, U.S., Swiss, and local climate models, boosting accuracy across sectors like agriculture, energy, transport, health, and urban planning.

WeatherWalay’s micro-climate mapping already shows large variations in rainfall within a few kilometres, such as Shah Allah Ditta, Bhara Kahu, and Bani Gala. Underscoring the need for hyperlocal forecasting.

With the introduction of “Weather on the Way,” Pakistan is taking a major leap toward safer highways, improved early-warning systems, and modern climate infrastructure, benefiting travelers, farmers, and public safety agencies alike.
