Mitch Starc Labels Pakistani Pacer as the Greatest Ever

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc has paid a big tribute to Pakistan legend Wasim Akram after overtaking him on the list of most successful left-arm fast bowlers in Test cricket. Starc said Akram remains the gold standard, despite the record changing hands.

“Wasim Akram is the greatest left-arm fast bowler of all time,” Starc said. “Even if someone takes more Test wickets than him, he will always be the best.”

Akram also responded generously, praising Starc after the Australian surpassed his 414 Test-wicket tally on the opening day of the pink-ball Ashes Test in Brisbane. Taking to X, Wasim Akram congratulated Starc on the milestone and hailed his work ethic.

Starc finished the day with 415 Test wickets in 102 matches, becoming the leading left-arm pace bowler in Test history. His opening burst set the tone for Australia, as he removed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks in quick succession.

He later broke England’s rebuilding partnership by dismissing Harry Brook during the day-night encounter at the Gabba.

England, who opted to bat first, struggled against Australia’s pace attack. With Nathan Lyon rested and Pat Cummins unavailable, Starc led the charge and struck immediately, sending Duckett back for a golden duck off a full outswinger. He then bowled Pope in his next over.

Starc’s dominance in day-night Tests also grew stronger. Duckett’s dismissal took his tally to 84 wickets in pink-ball matches, comfortably the most by any bowler and well ahead of Pat Cummins’ 43. He also became the first bowler to take more than 20 pink-ball wickets against a single opponent, adding another historic feat to his name.
