Mayor Opens Renovated Facilities at Karachi Zoo

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Sunday inaugurated new infrastructure and recreational projects at Karachi Zoo, saying the upgrades aim to improve visitor facilities and animal care.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the mayor said the facility, also known as Gandhi Garden, is an important public asset and has suffered from poor conditions for decades.

He said authorities have now constructed a modern animal enclosure spanning two acres, where lions Chandni and Rani are housed. The enclosure includes bulletproof glass and facilities for water play and rest.

The mayor said the zoo has taken steps to improve animal health and care, including plans to engage additional veterinary doctors. He noted that elephants currently living at the zoo were born there, which he described as an indicator of proper animal health.

He said the Reptile House has reopened after renovation, and a new tower has been built for visitors. The administration has also installed walkways, seating areas, and informational signboards to improve the visitor experience.

Mayor Wahab said thousands of people visit the zoo daily, particularly from low- and middle-income groups. He said the entry fee has been fixed at Rs30 for children and Rs50 for adults, and the revenue will be used for zoo improvements.

He clarified that the city has no plans to acquire new large animals and will focus on the care and breeding of existing ones.
