Punjab has gained fresh global attention after Gulf News highlighted its flagship urban reform program, Suthra Punjab, marking yet another international acknowledgment following previous features by Forbes, BBC, and Bloomberg.
Suthra Punjab has introduced the world’s largest unified waste management system, reshaping how a province of over 100 million people handles urban cleanliness, Gulf News stated.
The system now processes more than 50,000 tons of waste every day through a fully integrated, technology-backed framework.
It operates with 30,000 vehicles, a workforce of 150,000 sanitation employees, and 6,600 geo-tagged waste enclosures, all monitored through RFID-enabled weighbridges, IP cameras, and AI-powered tracking tools.
Punjab has shifted contractor payments and performance reviews to a KPI-based model, strengthening transparency and service delivery.
Citizens can now report issues directly through a centralized Complaints Management System.
According to Gulf News, the initiative has also formalized 150,000 sanitation jobs, ensuring fair compensation, proper uniforms, and adherence to safety standards.
The province is converting waste into environmental and economic value through several new projects.
These include a 25 MW waste-to-energy plant, composting facilities, a 5 MW solar park built on a rehabilitated dumpsite, and carbon-market-ready landfills developed with UNEP and GGGI.
Collectively, these efforts help curb 60,000 to 90,000 tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions every year.
Most of the machinery and digital systems used in Suthra Punjab are locally produced. The system meets ISO compliance standards and has been independently verified by SGS, earning Punjab recognition as a pioneering, data-driven circular economy model.
