Arsenal Extend Lead at Top of EPL Table After Chelsea Draw Late Blood at the Etihad

Arsenal ended the weekend six points clear at the top of the Premier League after Chelsea snatched a stoppage‑time equalizer to hold Manchester City 1–1 at the Etihad Stadium.

City looked on course to keep the pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side when Tijjani Reijnders broke the deadlock just before half-time. The Dutch midfielder collected a loose ball on the edge of the box, skipped past Benoît Badiashile, and drilled a low shot inside the near post to give Pep Guardiola’s team a deserved lead.

Erling Haaland twice went close before the interval, one deflected effort forcing a sharp save from Filip Jörgensen and another crashing against the upright, as the champions dominated the first 45 minutes but failed to add a second.

Chelsea, playing their first match since Enzo Maresca’s departure and led by interim boss Calum McFarlane, improved dramatically after the break. Pedro Neto wasted a big chance from close range, and substitute Liam Delap, formerly on City’s books, forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a strong save as the visitors pushed for a leveler.

City, meanwhile, faded and was unable to turn periods of control into a decisive second goal. Their wastefulness was punished deep into added time when Enzo Fernández arrived at the back post to bundle in from a low cross, silencing the home crowd and sparking wild celebrations in the away end.

The result means City have now dropped points in back‑to‑back league games, following their goalless draw at Sunderland, at a stage of the season when they usually surge. It was also the first time this campaign that they have failed to win a home league match after taking the lead.

For Arsenal, who move to 48 points, Chelsea’s late strike is a major boost in the title race. City sit on 42 points, level with Aston Villa but behind the Gunners by six, while Chelsea’s point keeps them firmly in the hunt for Champions League places, fifth in the table and just three points off fourth‑placed Liverpool.

Guardiola will now turn his focus to Brighton at home in midweek, with injuries to centre-backs Joško Gvardiol and Rúben Dias adding to his concerns. Chelsea, buoyed by a gritty performance and Fernández’s late goal, head into their short trip to Fulham with renewed belief that their season remains very much alive despite the managerial upheaval.
