SSGC Considers One-Day Industrial Gas Shutdown to Ease Shortages

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) is considering suspending gas supply to industrial consumers on Saturday to provide relief to domestic users, officials said on Wednesday.

Officials said the gas supply situation in Karachi has improved after the restoration of 25 to 30 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas from wells. The proposed step follows gas shortages in several parts of the city over the past few days, which affected household consumers.

SSGC officials said domestic demand rises sharply during the winter season, placing additional pressure on the supply network. Increased use of gas for heating purposes contributes to these seasonal shortages.

Earlier this month, the federal government decided not to increase gas tariffs for the next six months.

Separately, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) raised the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs10.68 per kilogram earlier this month, taking the new rate to Rs219.67 per kilogram.
