Apple May Finally Be Ready to Play the Chatbot Game

Apple may soon transform Siri into a chatbot similar to ChatGPT, according to a report from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.

Gurman reported that the revamped Siri chatbot could be integrated into iOS 27 and may serve as a focal point of Apple’s WWDC presentation in June.

Internal Shift in Siri Strategy

The chatbot-style Siri is reportedly codenamed “Campos” internally and will support both voice and text-based interactions.

Previously, Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi said he did not want Siri to function as a traditional chatbot, instead favoring AI features that are integrated seamlessly and available when needed. According to the report, Apple’s approach appears to have changed as competing AI chatbots gain traction.

The shift may also reflect growing concern within Apple about potential competition from OpenAI, which is reportedly planning to enter the hardware market. That effort is said to be led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.

Apple’s AI Catch-Up Efforts

Apple has faced criticism for falling behind rivals in the AI space. The company delayed the launch of a “more personalized Siri” several times and spent much of last year evaluating potential AI partners.

According to the report, Apple tested technologies from competitors, including Anthropic and OpenAI, before ultimately choosing Gemini from Google. Apple and Google confirmed their partnership earlier this month.

Apple has not publicly commented on the reported Siri chatbot plans.
