Australia Announces Playing XI for 1st T20 vs Pakistan

Australia have confirmed their playing XI for the first T20I against Pakistan in Lahore, with Travis Head set to lead an under-strength side as the visitors manage workloads and T20 World Cup 2026 preparation plans.

With a large chunk of their core group coming straight off a full Big Bash League (BBL) season, Australia appear focused on giving specific players game time and testing younger options rather than fielding their preferred first-choice unit from day one.

Head will captain Australia for only the second time in his career, after previously leading the side in a T20I in England in 2024.

The leadership call comes as regular captain Mitchell Marsh is not expected to feature in the first match due to the tight turnaround after travelling from Perth, while wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is also unlikely to be available for the opener for the same reason.

Australia are also without several established names on this tour, including Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, and Glenn Maxwell, with those players set to link up with the World Cup squad later in Sri Lanka.

In terms of bowling resources, the confirmed XI highlights another notable point: Xavier Bartlett is the only fast bowler from Australia’s World Cup group who is currently available in Pakistan, putting extra spotlight on how the rest of the attack supports him.

Pakistan, meanwhile, are expected to line up with a full-strength squad as they use the three-match series to settle combinations and roles ahead of the T20 World Cup. With the opener set at Gaddafi Stadium, the contrast in squad strength and preparation goals adds an extra layer of intrigue to the first clash.
