Lahore’s Basant celebrations have gained momentum as authorities installed Pakistan’s largest kite at Liberty Chowk, drawing large crowds and adding color to the city ahead of the festival.
The giant Lucknow-cut kite, prepared by the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, took 10 days to complete and has quickly become a major attraction for visitors.
Major roads and intersections across Lahore have been decorated with colorful kites and lights, while markets are witnessing a surge in demand for kites and strings.
Market sources said kite and string sales reached Rs180 million on the second day of shopping, bringing total spending over two days to Rs340 million. More than 600,000 kites were sold on the second day alone.
Residents are eagerly preparing for Basant’s return after nearly 25 years, with celebrations scheduled from February 6 to 8 across the city.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also announced on social media that citizens will enjoy an extended weekend, with February 6 declared a public holiday for Basant, following Kashmir Day on February 5.
Authorities hope the festival will bring safe and vibrant celebrations back to Lahore.
