Lyari University to Launch New MPhil, PhD and Health Programs

Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari (BBSUL) is preparing to launch several new academic programs, including MPhil and PhD degrees in multiple departments, as well as nursing and Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) programs.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Hussain Mehdi in an interview with The Express Tribune said the university expects to receive a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) within the next few days.

Once the NOC is granted for the nursing and DPT programs, the relevant accreditation councils will be invited to inspect the departments. Admissions for these programs are expected to begin in the next academic session.

According to the vice chancellor, preparations have been completed to introduce an MPhil in Information Technology, a PhD in Business, and both MPhil and PhD programs in English and Education.

Meanwhile, the university’s Senate is scheduled to meet on Wednesday for the first time in 15 years. The Senate is expected to approve the university’s budget, which had been used without formal approval during this period.

Dr. Mehdi said the university’s ongoing reforms, academic improvements, and development initiatives have unsettled certain vested interests, who he claims are spreading misleading propaganda. He said the institution is steadily moving toward academic improvement and institutional stability.

Over the past year, the university has appointed professors, associate professors, and lecturers to strengthen teaching and research. Previously, several departments did not have professors or deans, and some were operating without permanent leadership.

The vice chancellor also said the university has strengthened its administrative structure by formally establishing the syndicate. In addition, BBSUL has signed memorandums of understanding with more than 20 well-known companies as part of its development efforts.
