Apple Introduces M5 Pro and M5 Max Chips with New Fusion Architecture

Apple has announced its new M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, which will debut in the upcoming MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models.

Fusion Architecture and CPU Design

Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max are built using Apple’s new Fusion Architecture. The design combines two third-generation 3-nanometer dies through advanced packaging.

Each chip features an 18-core CPU configuration that is shared between the Pro and Max variants. The CPU consists of six high-performance “super cores” and twelve new performance cores. Unlike the previous generation, both the M5 Pro and M5 Max use the same CPU core configuration. In comparison, the M4 Pro had 14 total cores, while the M4 Max featured 16 cores with a different mix of performance and efficiency cores.

Apple states that the new super cores are designed to deliver faster single-threaded performance, supported by increased bandwidth, a new cache hierarchy, and improved branch prediction.

The updated performance cores are optimized for power-efficient, multi-threaded workloads. Apple claims the new CPU delivers up to a 40% performance increase.

GPU and AI Performance

The M5 Pro includes a 20-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The M5 Max is available with either a 32-core or 40-core GPU.

Each GPU core integrates a Neural Accelerator and higher unified memory bandwidth. Apple reports that peak AI compute performance increases by up to four times compared to the M4 Pro and M4 Max. The new GPU also provides a 35% improvement in ray tracing performance.

The 16-core Neural Engine benefits from higher memory bandwidth, contributing to faster AI processing.
