Mutton Prices in Pakistan Expected to Drop by Up to Rs. 800

Exports of mutton and beef from Pakistan have been completely suspended due to the closure of airspace and sea routes in several Arab countries. The disruption has entered its fifth day, halting shipments of meat to Arab markets.

The suspension has caused financial losses for large meat traders. At the same time, the halt in exports has raised expectations that local meat prices may decline due to increased availability in domestic markets.

Market sources say that with supplies no longer being sent to Arab countries, a larger quantity of meat will be available in Pakistan’s local markets. According to market estimates, mutton prices could decline by up to Rs. 800 per kilogram, while beef prices may fall by around Rs. 500 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, supplies of meat to Afghanistan had already been suspended earlier. Despite the export halt, wholesale dealers in Lahore and Karachi have begun increasing prices in local markets.

The absence of effective action in wholesale markets has contributed to the rise in prices. Currently, mutton is being sold in open markets between Rs. 2,600 and Rs. 3,000 per kilogram, while beef prices range from Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 1,600 per kilogram.

Meat exporters say the continued closure of routes could cause their prepared export stock to spoil, leading to financial losses and affecting Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings.
