Motorway Police Start Fining Drivers Over New Speed Limits

The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has stepped up enforcement against drivers violating newly introduced speed limits on motorways and national highways across the country.

Central Region spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed said action is being taken against violators while an awareness campaign is also underway to inform motorists about the revised speed limits.

As part of the campaign, motorway police officers are informing road users about the new limits at toll plazas and other key locations. Briefing camps have also been established in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Khanewal and Bahawalpur to guide drivers about the updated rules.

According to the motorway police, the speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles (LTV) on motorways has been reduced from 120 kilometres per hour to 100 kilometres per hour. The limit for public service vehicles (PSV) and heavy transport vehicles (HTV) has been reduced from 110 kilometres per hour to 90 kilometres per hour.

On national highways, the speed limit for cars and LTVs has been lowered from 100 kilometres per hour to 80 kilometres per hour, while the limit for PSV and HTV vehicles has been reduced from 80 kilometres per hour to 65 kilometres per hour.

The spokesperson said fines are also being issued for violations of the new limits. On Motorway M-2, a driver was fined Rs. 2,500 for driving at 115 kilometres per hour, while a passenger bus was fined Rs. 10,000 for travelling at 100 kilometres per hour.
