Major European Country Shuts Down Embassy in Pakistan

Finland will shut down its embassy in Islamabad this summer, marking another closure after reopening the mission in 2022 following a ten-year gap, The News reported.

According to Finnish embassy sources, the mission will continue operating until a final closure date is officially announced. The decision to close the embassy has been attributed to “strategic and operational reasons.”

The Northern European country had resumed diplomatic presence in Pakistan just two years ago, but has now decided to wind down operations once again.

The embassy currently offers limited consular services, with most visa and passport matters already handled by other Finnish missions, including the one in Abu Dhabi.

The move follows a similar step by neighboring Sweden, which closed its embassy in Pakistan indefinitely in 2023, citing security concerns.

Finland has also announced the closure of its embassies in Afghanistan and Myanmar, stating the same “operational and strategic reasons” behind the decisions.

The Islamabad mission will remain functional until further notice, with authorities yet to confirm the exact date of closure.

    • No one. They’re a confused bunch to open and shut time and again. Also, they’ve closed in two other countries as well which means the problem lies within themselves.
