Google has expanded access to its AI Inbox feature in Gmail, making it available to users in the United States after initially limiting it to a small group of testers in January.
However, access comes with a key restriction. The feature is currently only available through the Google AI Ultra subscription, which is priced at $249.99 per month. It is also labeled as a beta release.
What the AI Inbox Does
Despite its name, the AI Inbox does not replace the traditional inbox. Instead, it acts as a summary layer over incoming emails.
The feature generates a list of suggested tasks based on email content and highlights key topics that may require attention. It is powered by Google’s Gemini AI system.
Limitations and Concerns
The functionality depends heavily on the accuracy of the AI system. Users must rely on Gemini to correctly identify important emails and avoid missing or misinterpreting key information.
This raises concerns about reliability, particularly as AI systems continue to face challenges around accuracy and consistency.
Availability and Future Plans
At present, the AI Inbox is limited to users in the US who subscribe to the Google AI Ultra plan.
It remains unclear whether Google plans to extend the feature to lower-tier AI subscriptions or keep it exclusive to its highest-priced offering. No official confirmation has been provided on broader availability.
