The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation has completed 60 percent of the uplift and beautification work at Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market, bringing the project closer to completion.
The deadline for completion has been set for May 30, with inauguration expected in June by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The Rs. 875 million project may also see a cost increase.
By June, citizens are expected to see a significantly improved and more organized look of Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market. Meanwhile, a parking plaza project worth over Rs. 3.25 billion at Fawara Chowk, on the site of the old municipal office, has been sent to the Punjab government for approval.
Officials said underground cabling from Fawara Chowk to Dingi Khoi Chowk and nearby commercial areas has already been completed. Beautification work is now progressing at a fast pace, with traditional-style arches being constructed in front of shops using small red bricks.
Work is also underway on façade improvements of old buildings, repair and renovation, installation of uniform signboards, development of walking areas with tuff tiles, and construction of footpaths, washrooms, and seating benches. Decorative lighting and plantation of flowers and greenery have also started.
Authorities plan to open the area as a pedestrian-friendly walking street by May 30, similar to Bank Road Saddar.
In Commercial Market, underground cabling and utility relocation have been completed, while beautification work continues at pace.
Chief Officer Municipal Corporation Imran Ali said the project is being carried out under the “Sohna Punjab Programme,” with the May 30 deadline set to ensure improved cleanliness, better aesthetics, and an enhanced environment for residents.
He added that the existing incomplete parking plaza at Fawara Chowk does not meet parking needs, and a new plaza is planned nearby at the former municipal office site.
