The federal government has appointed Omar Rauf as the new Director General (DG) Telecom at the Ministry of IT and Telecom Pakistan. His appointment has been made on a contract basis for a period of three years, and he will serve in the MP II scale.

Rauf brings more than two decades of international telecom leadership experience to the role. He has contributed significantly to the development and optimization of network performance, with expertise spanning 2G, 3G, LTE, and 5G technologies. Over the years, he has led large-scale network planning, optimization, and rollout projects across multiple global markets, establishing himself as a recognized expert in telecom systems.

Prior to this appointment, Rauf served as Director of Telco and Cloud Services at VaporVM, where he played a key role in advancing 5G, Open RAN, and AI-driven network solutions. His work focused on next-generation telecom infrastructure. He has also held leadership roles at stc Kuwait and Nokia, along with several strategic advisory positions, where he guided network transformations and delivered performance improvements in complex telecom environments.

The position of DG Telecom had remained vacant since October last year, when the previous DG was appointed as CEO of the National Information Technology Board. Following the appointment of Faisal Iqbal Ratyal as CEO, the Ministry of IT and Telecom initiated the process to fill the vacancy, which has now concluded with Rauf’s appointment.
