Punjab Makes Online Property Tax Payments Mandatory

The Government of Punjab has introduced a major reform in property taxation by making online payment of property tax mandatory under the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2026–27.

Under the new policy, property owners will no longer be able to pay taxes through traditional manual or cash-based methods.

Instead, all property tax payments will be processed exclusively through digital platforms, a move aimed at increasing transparency, improving efficiency, and minimizing irregularities in tax collection.

Officials said the reform follows the successful implementation of a similar digital system for vehicle token tax payments, which are already being processed through online banking channels across the province.

The provincial administration stated that shifting to a fully digital tax collection system is part of broader efforts to modernize revenue management and strengthen accountability in public finances.

Authorities believe the transition will streamline tax payments while reducing administrative burdens and opportunities for corruption.

As an incentive for taxpayers, the government has also announced a 5 percent discount on property tax for individuals who choose to assess their properties through the self-assessment mechanism introduced in the budget.

Officials expect that the combination of self-assessment and mandatory online payments will encourage voluntary tax compliance and improve overall revenue collection.

The latest measures represent a significant step toward digital governance in Punjab and are expected to transform the way property taxation is managed across the province.
