The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a campaign to clean the city’s major storm water drains ahead of the monsoon season.
The drive is aimed at reducing the risk of urban flooding and ensuring smooth drainage during heavy rainfall.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the Hijrat Colony drain near PIDC Colony on Monday to review the ongoing desilting and cleaning work. He was accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffer and other senior KMC officials.
During the visit, the senior director of municipal services briefed the mayor on the progress of the drain-cleaning campaign and the steps being taken to complete the work before heavy monsoon rains begin.
Speaking on the occasion, Wahab said the main purpose of the operation was to improve Karachi’s monsoon preparedness and prevent inconvenience to residents caused by waterlogging.
He said the city’s overall situation during last year’s monsoon remained comparatively better because of timely preventive measures. He added that the KMC was determined to further improve its performance this year.
The mayor directed the concerned departments to speed up the cleaning of all major drains across Karachi. He said the work should be completed as soon as possible to ensure an effective drainage system before the monsoon rains begin.
Wahab said every possible effort would be made to protect citizens from difficulties during the rainy season. He warned that negligence or delays in carrying out assigned responsibilities would not be tolerated, and strict action would be taken against officers found responsible for poor arrangements.
