The Punjab government has announced plans to establish wastewater treatment plants in every city as part of a province-wide initiative to modernize water supply and sanitation infrastructure.
Speaking during the Punjab Assembly’s budget session, Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said the project aims to improve environmental sustainability and public health while upgrading outdated civic infrastructure.
She said the government is replacing underground water supply and sewerage pipelines that have been in use for more than 70 years.
The project covers 84 cities and includes new sewerage systems, underground water storage tanks, and recharge wells to strengthen groundwater resources.
Aurangzeb added that Water and Sanitation Agencies (WASA) are now operational in 41 districts, while over 1,500 machines have been provided to local government institutions to improve municipal services.
She also said clean drinking water projects worth Rs42 billion are underway in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, and nearby areas, with around 5,800 water filtration plants already serving communities across Punjab.
The minister further announced that the Sargodha Cardiology Hospital is expected to be inaugurated in the first week of July, with construction and equipment installation completed.
She said the government’s model villages program will provide improved water supply, sanitation, and sewerage services to 2,400 villages across the province.
According to Aurangzeb, expanding wastewater treatment infrastructure remains a key priority for the Punjab government to ensure sustainable urban development and improve the quality of life for residents.
