Sophia the Saudi Robot Now Has a Baby Sister ‘Alexa’

A great learning tool for kids!

Remember the human-like robot with artificial intelligence from Saudi Arabia, Sophia? Now Sophia has a baby sister, Alexa.

While Sophia had the privilege of getting citizenship status like a real person, her ‘baby sister’ Alexa was merely created as a tool to educate children.

‘She is a ‘unique programmable, educational companion for kids, inspiring children to learn through a safe, interactive, human-robot experience’.

Presenting Alexa or Little Sophia

Most of us are already calling her ‘Little Sophia’ and we think that name will catch on fast.

Here’s a look at Little Sophia:

A Silicon Valley-based company Hansen Robotics created Alexa. The same company also created Sophia as well.

At its simplest, Alexa can talk to children and sing songs. But ‘she’ is capable of a lot more than that. This ‘baby robot’ is to teach children about various subjects as well as programming skills.

Little Sophia is only 36 centimeters long.

The AI will teach children aged 7-13 years-old about science, technology, math, engineering, etc.

Its Programmable

Through a smartphone application that works on iOS and Android, the robot can be taught new things. Its a good thing that Alexa was developed with open source programming tools, which opens the robot up to all sorts of possibilities.

Besides functionality, the robot also looks good as can be, save for those big beady eyes (we think).

Additionally, Little Sophia has augmented reality features as well which allows you to see the robot’s ‘real face’ before changing its clothes.

The project is currently in the experimental phase. It is also on Kickstarter, and people are funding its development. Kickstarter raised $75,000 dollars in 59 days for the project.

Fancy getting this? Little Sophia is also being sold at a price of $99 for early buyers.
