At an event in India, Xiaomi took off the covers from its new Y-series of phones, which sit under the company’s Redmi moniker. As expected, the new Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite are mid-low end phones. The “Y” in their name stands for “Youth”.
Both phones are actually the international variants of Redmi Note 5A and Redmi Note 5A Prime.
Redmi Y1
The Redmi Y1 is the better phone of the two. It comes with a 5.5” display on the front with 720p HD resolution and curved 2.5D glass. It features a fingerprint sensor and an IR blaster as well.
Under the hood, you get a Snapdragon 435 processor with its eight cores. It comes in two versions; either 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage or 4 GB RAM with 64 GB storage. The phone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with MIUI 9 skin set to come in the future. It supports dual-SIM connectivity.
At the front is a 16 MP camera, while the back boasts a 13 MP camera. It has a 3,080 mAh non-removable battery.
Redmi Y1 will be priced at $140 for the 3 GB model, while the 4 GB model will start at $170.
Redmi Y1 Lite
The Redmi Y1 Lite includes a 5.5” 720p display, though without the curved 2.5D glass on it. Like the Y1, it comes with Corning Gorilla Glass for protection. Xiaomi did not add a fingerprint sensor on the Y1 lite.
Under the hood is a quad-core Snapdragon 425 processor with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage. It features the same software package as the Y1.
The camera here is 13 MP sensor, with a 5 MP sensor available on the front, as well. Y1 Lite also has the same battery capacity as the Y1 with a 3,080 mAh unit.
The pricing for the only version is set at $110.
