Pak Railways to Procure 230 Long-Distance Passenger Coaches

Pakistan Railways (PR) has decided to acquire 230 long-distance passenger coaches, 20 brake vans, and 800 high capacity wagons in order to meet the increased demand after launching new trains and increase revenues.

Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed has announced that local manufacturing of the passenger coaches will start next year while domestic production of locomotives will also start in the next phase.

According to the sources, 230 long-distance passenger coaches will include 80 economy-class coaches, 30 parlor cars, 80 AC coaches, 20 luggage cars, and 20 brake vehicles.

Whereas, 800 high-capacity wagons and 20 brake vans will include 200 covered wagons (40 CBU, 160 CKD), 300 high-sided open top wagons (230 CKD, 70 CBU), 300 container wagons, and 20 bogie brake vans.

The ministry intends to involve international manufacturers for the provision of the said passenger coaches, high-capacity wagons, and brake vans. Reportedly, the ministry had launched a worldwide tender on January 21, which remains open till March 7.

Moreover, the ministry has proposed Rs. 5.118 billion for rolling stock availability projects that include Rs. 1.424 billion for locomotives and Rs. 3.69 billion for wagons and carriages under the Public Sector Development (PSPD) for 2019-20.
