The Fawara Chowk Shelter Home, Rawalpindi, has accommodated more than 6000 homeless individuals since it opened last year on December 12.
Focal person of the shelter home and Cantonment Magistrate, Hafiz Muhammad Imran, has revealed that the capacity of the shelter home has been enhanced from 80 to 125.
The shelter home, located in a parking plaza, opens its doors to the homeless from 5:30 pm to 8 am every day. People need to present their National Identity Card (NIC) and phone number of a close relative to gain access.

To date, as much as 12 elderly citizens have taken near-permanent residence at the shelter home. The shelter provides a warm bed, blankets, and two meals to its occupants. The senior citizens are also provided with the medical facilities by the administration.
Imran said that most of the occupants are day laborers and belong to far off areas like Dir, Swat, and even Chitral. He said that people are well taken care of and provided with all the basic facilities.
Moreover, medical facilities are provided at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) in case of an emergency. The focal person said that Rawalpindi Waste Management Company works in two shifts to ensure cleanliness in the area.
