JF-17 Thunder Block 3 Gets Major Upgrades

JF-17 Thunder fighter jet is about to get a major upgrade. The upgraded version of Pakistan-China co-developed fighter jet is undergoing development and production.

A Chinese legislator and a chief designer of the fighter jet, Yang Wei, has revealed that JF-17 Block 3 will have enhanced informatized warfare capability and weapons.

He revealed this development in a press conference. According to a source, the JF-17 Block 3 will have an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and a helmet-mounted sight (HMS) system. The AESA radar will augment the jet’s capability, enabling it to engage from a longer range and attack multiple targets.

The HMS system will allow pilots to aim anything in his/her sight. Moreover, the new variant of the JF-17 family will allow information sharing between the fighter and other platforms. This will increase the efficacy of the entire combat system in defending against strong adversaries.

Moreover, the new upgrade will bring JF-17 Block 3 to be a close match of an improved version of the F-16 fighter jet.

The JF-17 thunder is generally dubbed as an advanced as well as a cost-effective fighter. As of last year, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) possessed 100 JF-17 fighters in its fleet.
