Redmi 8A Launches With Flagship-Grade Camera & 5000 mAh Battery For $91

The Redmi 8A is set to go official in India today. The entry-level smartphone flaunts a 6.22-inch HD+ display, an enormous 5000 mAh battery, and a Sony IMX363 camera, all for only $91.

Design and Display

The phone rocks a full plastic, splash-resistant body with Xiaomi’s new Aura Wave grip design. The 6.22-inch HD+ (720 x 1520 pixels) display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

There is only a single camera at the back, which is fair considering the phone’s extremely affordable price tag. There is no fingerprint reader on the phone either, so you’ll have to make do with patterns and face unlock.

Color options of the phone include Sunset Red, Midnight Black, and Ocean Blue.

Internals and Storage

It has 32GB of internal storage alongside 2GB of RAM, but there is a 3GB/32GB variant as well, which costs a bit more. Both variants are powered by the Snapdragon 439 SoC.

The phone boots Android Pie with Xiaomi’s MIUI 10 on top and an update to MIUI 11 will be available in the future.

Cameras

As mentioned before, there is only a single camera at the back. It is a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor equipped with AI portrait mode, HDR, LED flash, Dual PD, and more. This is the same camera sensor that was used in several flagship devices from 2018 and 2019 like the Google Pixel 3 and Pocophone F1. It can record 1080p videos at 30FPS.

The front-facing 8MP selfie camera housed in the waterdrop notch can also snap HDR photos and record 1080p videos at 30 FPS.

Battery and Pricing

Even though it is only an entry-level smartphone, the Redmi 8A is packed with a massive 5000 mAh battery, which can be topped up via the USB Type C port. There is 18W fast charging as well, but you’ll need a compatible charger to make the most of it as the box only includes a 10W charger.

The base model (2GB/32GB) will go on sale on September 27 for $91, whereas the 3/32GB variant will set you back $98.
