Pakistan wicket-keeper, Mohammad Rizwan, continued his rich vein of form with the bat with yet another half-century in the first innings of the second Test match between Pakistan and New Zealand at Christchurch.

Rizwan came out to bat after Pakistan were struggling at 83/4 in the first innings. As has been the case with Pakistan on this tour, the lower order has to recuse the ship after the top order collapses. Rizwan played a gritty inning of 61 before being sent back to the pavilion by Kyle Jamieson.

Rizwan’s fifth consecutive half-century took him past greats such as Zaheer Abbas, Aravinda De Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, Saurav Ganguly, Ijaz Ahmed, and Rahul Dravid in scoring more consecutive fifties by a sub-continent player in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. He is now second on the list behind Indian batsman, Gundappa Viswanath. He is also the only wicket-keeper batsman to be among the list.

Rizwan has scored 517 runs in 16 Test matches. No other Pakistan wicket-keeper has scored more runs than him at the same stage. His average of 46.9 in overseas Tests is also the highest in the history of Pakistani wicket-keepers.

Rizwan was recently announced as Pakistan’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2020, and his performances with the bat have been sublime. He became Pakistan’s 33rd Test captain when he led the team in the first Test against New Zealand, standing in for injured Babar Azam.
