Shoaib Akhtar Blames Sarfaraz Ahmed for Fawad Alam’s Lost Years

The exclusion of Fawad Alam from the Pakistan Test squad for over ten years has raised questions in the cricketing fraternity, and many cricketing experts and fans have questioned the previous selection committees’ decision to not select him in the squad.

Fawad has made an impressive comeback to the team after a gap of ten years. He recently scored a century against New Zealand in New Zealand in the first Test match. He then scored another brilliant century in the first Test match against South Africa at National Stadium Karachi. This was Fawad’s first Test match at his home ground.

Former fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar, pointed out that it was not the fault of one selection committee, and Fawad’s omission from the Test squad cannot be blamed on the ‘Lahore and Karachi’ differences. Akhtar raised a question for the former captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed, asking why did he not include Fawad during his captaincy.

Akhtar said that although many people blame former chief selector, Inzamam-ul-Haq, and former captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, for Fawad’s exclusion from the team, the entire blame does not rest with them.

“There is a debate going on that Punjabis kept Fawad Alam out of the [national] team. Misbah was captain for five years and Inzamam was the chief selector, so they kept him out, which is correct,” Akhtar said.

He added, “But Sarfaraz, who belongs to Karachi, was also the captain for three years. Why didn’t he select him? Think about that as well. Don’t put the entire blame on Misbah and Inzamam.”

Fawad Alam has scored three Test centuries in his short career of eight matches and will be looking to add to his tally in the second Test match scheduled to begin from 4 February at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
