Chief Executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Richard Gould has backed Pakistan to host the Champions Trophy 2025, even though India might opt out of the tournament.
In an interview with BBC, Gould highlighted the thrilling possibility of England hosting a Test series between India and Pakistan.
During the tea break on day one of the third Test between England and the West Indies, Gould touched on various subjects, including the chance for England to stage a historic Test series between the two rival nations.
This concept has been in discussion for several years, with renowned English venues like Lord’s, The Oval, and Edgbaston showing interest in hosting the match.
“Everybody would love that. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible. The politics between the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board are long known, as are the politics between governments. And I find that fascinating,” Gould stated.
The ECB CEO said that he attended ICC meetings in Sri Lanka and observed Pakistani and Indian cricket fans getting along great together. However, introducing a political aspect causes problems between the two.
Gould also confirmed the ECB’s support for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year, despite uncertainties over India’s participation due to political tensions.
“There’s a great deal of determination to make sure it [Champions Trophy] is hosted in Pakistan next year,” said Gould. “Particularly from the PCB and the ECB.”
The previous Champions Trophy took place in England back in 2017, where Pakistan defeated India in the final to win the Championship.
