Lahore High Court Reinstates Lt. Gen Munir Afsar as NADRA Chairman

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has reinstated Lieutenant General Munir Afsar as the chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

This decision came after the federal government appealed against a previous ruling that nullified his appointment. A two-member bench, led by Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, heard the case and overturned the earlier verdict of a single bench that had voided the appointment.

The court has now called for the parties’ responses regarding the matter. Lieutenant General Munir Afsar was originally appointed NADRA chairman on October 2 of the previous year.

The federal cabinet approved his appointment after being shortlisted by a selection committee and two other candidates proposed by the Ministry of Interior. His selection came following the resignation of former NADRA chairman Tariq Malik, who stepped down after meeting with then-Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The restoration of Afsar’s appointment marks a significant development in the ongoing legal challenge, with further proceedings expected to follow as the court continues to review the case.

  • NADRA is a prime Database organisation of Pakistan. It needs a senior level Database Principle Engineer with years of experience in the industry. But it is strange that a person with no Scientific background is running as a Chairman and making technical decisions in such a privileged institute. This is unfortunate and it is against all forms of Merit.
Sorry but an Acting General as the head of Nadra is not justifiable in any form. Also if Generals will start taking IT jobs then where the top level IT talent will go?.

  • I apologise for not offering any intellectual insight to the honorable courts decision. I am merely here to say “Laanat beshumar yahan ki establisment pe aur unke ese feslon pe”.
