PCB Set to Allow PSL Franchises to Directly Sign Marquee Players for Season 10

Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to undergo drastic changes, as direct contracts between franchises and international stars are reportedly on the table.

Franchises may soon have the freedom to negotiate directly with foreign players for marquee signings, marking a shift from the traditional draft system.

This could add a competitive edge to the PSL ahead of its tenth edition, which is already struggling with delays and scheduling issues.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has yet to finalize dates for the 2025 season, with a tentative window proposed between April 10 and May 25. However, a clash with the Indian Premier League (IPL) looms, which could hinder player availability and revenue in the tenth edition of the league.

Additionally, the triangular series scheduled outside the Future Tours Program (FTP) and the Champions Trophy may disrupt the 2025 PSL’s usual dates.

PSL franchises are still waiting for their revenue share from the ninth edition, as unpaid dues from major stakeholders remain unresolved.

The PCB is considering allowing each franchise to sign one or two marquee international players, with higher-than-usual salaries to lure global talent to Pakistan.

A $500,000 allocation from the broadcast deal has been earmarked for this, but the uncertainty surrounding player availability persists.

Franchise owners have raised concerns about scheduling conflicts, particularly with the IPL. Despite the PCB claiming that the PSL schedule was a joint decision, franchise executives contest that they were not given adequate input.

With a growing list of challenges, the PSL’s next edition faces a critical juncture as stakeholders navigate financial and logistical hurdles.
