For the past five years, the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been the financial backbone of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), consistently serving as its largest source of revenue.
However, according to a report by Profit, recent financial statements reveal a significant shift: the PSL is no longer the PCB’s primary income generator.
Since its inception, the HBL PSL has played a crucial role in stabilizing Pakistan cricket’s finances. Beyond its cultural and developmental contributions, the league has been a financial powerhouse, at times contributing up to half of the PCB’s total revenue. Even during fiscal years when the PCB faced losses, the PSL remained a profitable venture.
The 2022-23 financial year marked a turning point. For the first time since 2018, the PSL was not the PCB’s biggest revenue source. Instead, international cricket hosted by Pakistan took the lead, generating nearly Rs 5.5 billion, compared to the PSL’s Rs 3.55 billion for 2023.
Typically, revenue from international tournaments remains relatively stable, with minor fluctuations based on team performance and tournament outcomes. For instance, Pakistan’s revenue from international cricket was Rs 2.4 billion in 2021 and increased to Rs 2.8 billion in 2022, partly due to the team’s runner-up finish at the T20 World Cup in Australia.
However, the substantial increase to Rs 5.5 billion in 2023 raises questions, especially given the team’s lack of a consistent winning streak in recent years. Several factors could explain this surge:
- Increased Hosting of International Matches: Pakistan has successfully hosted more international matches, attracting larger audiences and generating higher ticket sales and broadcasting rights.
- Enhanced Broadcasting Deals: Improved broadcasting agreements and sponsorships for international matches may have contributed significantly to the revenue increase.
- Return of International Teams: The return of major international teams to Pakistan after years of security concerns has likely boosted revenue, as these matches draw significant attention and financial interest.
