In what is sure to provide some Formula 1 diehards with some semblance of relief. Michael Schumacher has reportedly been seen in public for the first time in 11 years at the wedding of his daughter, Gina-Marie, in Mallorca.
The 55-year-old, who has remained out of the public eye since suffering a serious brain injury from a 2013 skiing accident, made a rare appearance at the family’s luxurious villa.
Gina-Marie, 27, married Iain Bethke, also 27, in a ceremony held at the Schumacher family’s four-acre estate. The property, which features two swimming pools, a helipad, and expansive gardens, was purchased by the family in 2017 from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
The wedding took place under strict security measures and is thought to be Schumacher’s first public interaction with friends and family since his accident. Guests were asked to leave their phones at the entrance to maintain privacy during the event.
Since the tragic accident, Schumacher’s family, especially his wife Corinna, have been very protective of his privacy. Access to him has been limited to immediate family members and a small medical team, resulting in estrangement from his extended family, including his brother, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher.
Ralf expressed his ongoing support despite the challenges of not being able to see his brother. Speaking to the media, he said “When I see his children Gina-Maria and Mick, my heart smiles”.
The ceremony marks the first indication that the Schumacher family might be relaxing their stringent privacy measures. There are speculations that Michael Schumacher could attend more public events in the future, including the potential wedding of his son Mick, 25, who is reportedly engaged to Danish model Laila Hasanovic.
