The Punjab government has unveiled a comprehensive anti-smog policy presented to the Lahore High Court, focusing on new restrictions aimed at curbing pollution during peak smog months. Among the measures, weddings will no longer be permitted between October and December, starting next year.
This policy seeks to tackle pollution by reducing events that significantly contribute to traffic and energy consumption during the smog season. Punjab’s Advocate General informed the court of the policy, highlighting that, for the first time, a dedicated budget has been set aside for smog reduction.
The court expressed approval of these steps, commenting, “This administration has taken more effective actions compared to previous governments.” The policy also includes distributing super seeders to farmers to discourage crop burning, which contributes heavily to smog.
The court suggested additional measures, such as limiting weddings to one-dish menus and reducing the number of wedding events. It also pointed to global practices where businesses close by 5 PM to cut emissions, contrasting with Pakistan’s late-night commercial hours.
As Lahore battles severe pollution levels, with the city’s air quality index (AQI) soaring to hazardous levels, the government is urged to consider a long-term smog control strategy. With PM2.5 pollutants posing severe health risks, residents are advised to minimize outdoor exposure and use protective measures like masks and air purifiers.
